Planting & bed care

Garden Beds & Planting

Beds that hold their shape, and plants chosen to survive a Zone 5b winter.

What's involved

Beds that hold their shape, and plants chosen to survive a Zone 5b winter.

A bed lives or dies on its edge and its soil. We cut a clean spade edge that holds through the season, top up with triple-mix where the soil has gone thin, and mulch to two inches — enough to suppress weeds without smothering crowns. Plant choices are made for what actually thrives here: native perennials, hardy shrubs, and structure that still looks like something in February.

  • Seasonal colour rotations
  • Soil top-up and amendment
  • Perennial division and cutback
